About this session:Deanne will share some of her favourite tools from her technology toolbox that she uses to engage and inspire students in both her own face to face drama classrooms and to the three other virtual classrooms she teaches simultaneously. These tools can be used across all learning areas and most age groups! Such tools include social media, apps etc such as Facebook, Pinterest, Voki, Thinglink, Sway, Office Mix, NearPod and many more.

About Deanne Joosten

Deanne Joosten is a passionate innovative teacher of drama. Her innovative use of technology to create an exciting and engaging learning environment has led to her being chosen as a Microsoft Innovative Educator 2015. She is pioneering the virtual teaching of drama to four classrooms simultaneously and boldly goes where others think it is impossible to go. Currently Deanne is the head of Performing Arts at P-12 Phoenix Community College in Ballarat, Victoria. She is identifying and evaluating the use of ICT across all learning areas.
Deeane is also very interested in the use of technology in the theatre. Several years ago, Deanne directed a play which was included in the VCAA Theatre Studies playlist. During the projection, Deanne experimented with hand held projectors – an innovative addition which brought a new and exciting element to the performance. Deanne is keen to explore the use of augmented reality into future performances. As a life long learner and thought leader, Deanne is very excited about the learning curve over the next 12 months.

Images in Learning

About this session: “An image is worth a 1000 words!” With this in mind, how can digital images be used for learning. What impact has technology on the use of images for learning? This will be an unconference style presentation where participants will share on some of the following topics:

  • favourite technology for capturing images and its impact for the classroom
  • different properties of digital images ie jpg, tiff, png etc and best sizes for storing images
  • tips and hints for using, uploading images online
  • favourite tools for editing images
  • sites to store images and favourite sites to share images
  • creative commons
  • suggestions of where to find copyright free images
  • and more

Playing in the Sandpit – the Outcome

As this was an unconference style workshop session, there is always an element of uncertainty as to how things will pan out. However, it was a great session, with educators from Australia, UK and USA playing and sharing together. You can listen to the recording by clicking on this link.

Here is what it looked like:-

  1. Peggy George (@peggygeorge) shared the app she has created for Classroom2.0LIVE using cleverlize – the app creating program that we learnt about in last week’s session.
  2. An application share revealed the sites that Carole McCulloch had shared as a comment on this webinar posting on the Australia Series blog:- Tools that are collated on the SA eLearning site and Marlene Manto’s blog where the most recent post shared some great sites for MS Powerpoint.
  3. Jo Frei shared some great images from her blog Sprite’s site and Gifted Resources blog
  4. I shared fotor – a collage making online tool, that is free and requires no registration – always a bonus when working with students. Participants were quickly shown the basics and then given 3 mins to create their own collage. A quick demo was given on saving and sharing options. Participants copied their collages onto the whiteboard in Blackboard Collaborate and shared their results – a wonderful diversity of experiences and interests.
  5. Marc Grossman @UKGrossman from UK demonstrated the new look Scratch 2.0
  6. Peggy discussed her attendance at the virtual 4T Conference over the last few days and shared her livebinder for March Classroom2.0 featuring a presenter on Scratch and Stretchinstructor.
  7. Finally people shared some of the collage making tools that they liked using – photoscape, pizap and shape collage, jigsaw maker

About this session: This is an ‘unconference’ style webinar where participants are encouraged to bring along some of the latest tools or apps that they are using or ‘playing’ with. Those who join us will have the chance to play with the tools, share what they have learnt and discuss how it could be used in the classroom or learning. Alternatively, come along with questions about some tools that you would like to use.

About this session: Last Tuesday we looked at google document as a tool for engaging students. Participants also shared the names of tools that they had experienced. This second session in this series will enable participants to share their favourite tools and step us through them. We will then use  our collective intelligence and experience to brainstorm how these can be successfully used for learning.

Come along and if possible bring along a favourite tool, share it with us and push innovation further. Where possible the tool will be stepped through and a collective document created to capture our knowledge.

About this session:- Anne Mirtschin will lead a discussion on engaging students with technology. Discussion may centre around the following:-

  • is engagement in learning important?
  • what impact does it have on learning
  • how do we know when students are engaged – how does it look, feel and sound?
  • Sharing tools that participants have found to work
  • Looking at google apps, starting with google document and how it can be used for collaborative learning, sharing, engagement etc. This has been one of my favourite tools.

  4. Walk through some other collaborative google apps including Document and Presentation
